Abstract

Formaldehyde is reacted with hydroxy-aromatic sulphones and either hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acids or aryloxy fatty acids by boiling in aqueous acid with the addition of compounds derived from hydrocarbons containing at least one benzene ring by replacing at least one hydrogen atom in a benzene ring with a hydroxyl group. Suitable sulphones are 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone, phenyl-hydroxynaphthyl sulphone or 41,411-dihydroxydiphenylbenzene-1,3-disulphone; suitable acids are hydroxy benzoic, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl benzoic, phenoxyacetic and cresoxyacetic acids. Suitable hydroxy derivatives of hydrocarbons are 2-hydroxy-diphenyl, 4-hydroxy-diphenyl, 2-hydroxy-diphenylmethane and/or o-dihydroxy benzene, 2-3% by weight based on the organic acids being preferred. The preferred catalyst is conc. HCl. The products are alcohol-soluble. German Specification 693,770 also is referred to.
