Abstract
In a process for the extraction of phenols from oils by heating with an aqueous solution of alkali-metal phenolates, the aqueous solution is treated prior to use with an organic solvent for phenols, containing oxygen, having a branched carbon chain in the molecule and a boiling range of 230-350 DEG C., and/or with steam, so that the resulting aqueous solution has a molar ratio of acid to alkali of 1.03 : 1 to 1.25 : 1. The solvent may be an alcohol, ether, ester, or an aliphatic aldehyde synthesized from aliphatic olefines, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen.
