Abstract

Diphenyl is obtained by the pyrolysis of benzene vapour moving with a turbulence corresponding to a Reynolds number of greater than 100,000, e.g. up to 700,000. Pyrolysis is effected conventionally at 550-900 DEG C.; preferably the benzene is not distinctly preheated, the vapour being at 450-650 DEG C. at the beginning of the reaction zone and 700-870 DEG C. at the end, preferably with a temperature difference of 100-200 DEG C. between beginning and end. The residence time may be 0.1-3 seconds. Suitable apparatus is described in Specification 1,003,720.
