Abstract

<PICT:0939314/IV(a)/1> Potentially crimped filaments of a synthetic thermoplastic linear high polymer are made by stretching filaments of such a polymer in a continuous manner to 2-8 times their original length, and, during the stretching operation, heating the filaments on one side for a very short time by passing them at a speed of more than 100 m./min. over a small hot surface heated to 300 DEG -900 DEG C., the filaments making contact with the hot surface for a distance of 0,3-5,0 mm. and the threadline of the filaments being so deflected in passing over the hot surface that the portion of the filaments approaching the surface forms with the portion of the filaments leaving the surface an angle of 130-170 degrees. Filaments of polyethylene teraphthalate, polyhexamethylenediamine adipate and poly-S -caprolactam may be so treated. An electrically heated wire may be used as the hot surface, which is preferably heated to 500 DEG 600 DEG C., the period of contact of the filaments therewith being 0,00008 to 0,01 secs. Before passing the filaments over the hot surface they may be wetted with water or with an aqueous solution of a wetting agent. Filaments so treated are crimped by shrinking, e.g. by heating in air at 100 DEG -240 DEG C. or passing them over a plate or roller at the same temperature, or by heating in water at 80 DEG -100 DEG C. Alternatively a woven or knitted fabric may be made with the potentially crimped filaments and the fabric subjected to shrinking by treatment as above, or with a suitable solvent, e.g. ethylene chloride or acetone. In apparatus as shown, filaments 1 are passed around feed roller 2 and separating roller 3, the stretch point being localized by passage of the filaments around heated snubbing rod 4, having a diameter of 60 mm. The filaments now pass over wire 5, having a diameter of about 2 mm., which is electrically heated, to the draw roller 6 and associated separating roller 7.
