Abstract

Tubular film of thermoplastic material is stretched laterally by passing it through two pairs of pinch rolls, between which it is inflated, and reducing the distance between the two pairs of rolls until the desired degree of lateral stretching is obtained. Longitudinal stretching may also be effected by rotating the second pair of rolls at a higher peripheral speed than the first pair. The film, e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate, is preferably warmed to about <PICT:0741962/IV(a)/1> 80 DEG C. The stretching may be carried out continuously with production or as an after-treatment. As shown, tubular film is fed through pinch rolls 2 and guide plates 3 to the heater 4, which is cylindrical with a bell-shaped mouth and may be of polished or etched metal, or of metal coated with polytetrafluorethylene or other lubricant. The film then passes through guide plates 5 and pinch rolls 6, the plates 5 and rolls 6 being longitudinally movable. The plates 5 may be replaced by converging pairs of bars or rollers. Instead of the cylindrical heater 4 in contact with the film, an annular radiant heating element spaced from the film may be used.
