Abstract

935,841. Wheel suspension for railway vehicles. METALASTIK Ltd. April 12, 1961 [May 5, 1960], No. 15990/60. Class 103(6). The axle box for a railway vehicle wheel 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, is mounted at 11 in a radius arm 6 pivoted at 7 to the vehicle frame 5 and an acuate rubber spring 15, comprised of layers 16 of rubber and metal plates 17, is mounted between a head 12 or the arm 6 and a seating block 14 carried by the frame. The spring and the head portion 12 of the arm which engages the spring have a common centre of curvature 13 offset from the pivot 7. During rising and falling movements of the arm 6 the spring 15 is under shear and compression and the compressive strain is substantially constant throughout the arcuate length of the spring in planes normal to the pivot axis. The pivot 7 comprises inner and outer cylindrical elements 8, 9 with a rubber interlayer 10 and the spring 15 is retained transversely, by checks 18 on the head 12 and side plates on the block 14. The spring 15 may be of non-circular form e.g. part-spiral. In another embodiment the spring 15 is disposed inboard of the wheel axis between the latter and the radius arm pivot axis, the head 12 having a concave surface and the block 14 having a convex surface. In this case the pivot 7 is a rubber bush.
