Abstract
<PICT:0935432/III/1> Crystals are increased in size by forming a suspension in a saturated solution and then alternately raising and lowering the temperature of the solution in cyclic manner, while maintaining the crystals in suspension so as to increase the size of some crystals at the expense of others. Each cycle may last for 3-20 minutes. The temperature may alternate between 10 DEG and 50 DEG C. There may be 5-10 cycles. As shown a slurry passes from a feed chamber 1 to solid collection chamber 2 and liquid overflow pipe 3 via a pipe 4 wherein it is alternately heated and cooled by means of heaters 5 and coolers 6 while being subjected to the pulsating action of an oscillating diaphragm 7 operated by a piston engine 8. Oxalic acid crystals may be grown in cyclohexanone or a mixture of acetone and water as solvent, and ammonium perchlorate crystals may be grown in water as solvent.
