935,182. Taps and dies. A. BECK. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 42636/59. Class 83 (3). A thread-cutting tap has a portion formed with an external thread of which the crest is at a constant pitch, this portion comprises three regions, the second region being at the leading end or tip and the third region lying between the first and second regions, the first region having a thread of constant diameter, the thread in the second region decreasing towards the tip and having a maximum crest diameter less than that of the first region but greater than the root diameter of the first region, the thread in the third region being of V-section similar to the thread in the first and second regions but being truncated with the diameter decreasing towards the second region. The second (leading) region 5, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a number of turns of complete V-threads, the outside diameter of which lies along a conical surface inclined at an angle II of about two-thirds the value of angle C. The latter is the taper angle for producing the truncated form of the middle or third region 4 and may vary between 6 and 14 degrees. The first or end region 3 comprises V-threads of the full form and diameter to be cut and merges into the third region. The application of the arrangement of threads to a die is also described.
