Abstract

943,575. Thread-forming screws. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. Feb. 16, 1962 [April 26, 1961], No. 6024/62. Heading B3V. A thread-swaging screw 10 comprises a shank 11 with a tapered pilot section 11a on which there is a continuous rolled thread 13, the part of the thread on the pilot 11a being partially interrupted by circumferentially spaced flutes F producing lobes L, and the thread being truncated at each flute F and having a substantially full crest at each lobe L and on the rear part 11b of the shank. One or more lobes may be formed, and the depth of the thread decreases towards the end of the pilot 11a. The lobes may have symmetrical leading and trailing swaging faces 16, 17, Fig. 2, or the leading face may subtend a greater or lesser angle than the trailing face, Figs. 2A, 2B (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 3, the flutes F3 are narrow and the lobes L3 wide.
