Abstract

A process of making spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises preparing a melt of gray cast iron and, just before adding the spheroidizing agent, chilling the melt by the addition of solid metal. The cast iron melt may be heated to a high temperature, e.g. 2850 DEG F. to ensure solution of the carbon before adding 3-5% of solid metal, e.g. copper, nickel, pig-iron, cast iron, steel, or scrap spheroidal graphite cast iron, to reduce the temperature by at least 100 DEG F. A silicon addition may be made after chilling the melt.
