Abstract

A process for producing spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises adding tellurium to the molten cast iron, and then graphitizing the melt with a magnesium silicon alloy in amount 30-70 times the effective tellurium addition which is defined as the amount of tellurium added plus 1/2 of the sulphur content of the cast iron minus 1/20 of the manganese content of the cast iron. The actual amount of tellurium added is related to the thickness of the casting to be produced and the preferred additions are, 0.05% for a casting section of 1 inch and under, 0.06% for a casting section of 1 to 3 inches, and 0.07% for a casting section over 3 inches. The magnesium silicon alloy may consist of 10% Mg, more than 30% Si, and the balance Fe. Specifications 553,573, 630,070 and 659,928 are referred to.
