Abstract
<PICT:0927414/III/1> A rod is zone-melted using an induction heating pancake coil 2 and an associated coil 3 fixed relative to coil 2, the coils being fed with current of the same frequency but in phase opposition so as to reduce the length of the molten zone. The coils may be in the same or separate circuits. The counter-field produced by coil 3 may be 1/4-1/2 the strength of that produced by coil 2. The coils may be of silver-coated copper tubing and may be in the same cooling circuit.
