To eliminate machining errors in the markings of a scale, an adjustable optical element is provided for each scale marking whereby any desired image-shift may be effected. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a supporting device 4 has apertures opposite each scale-marking 2 provided with a rotatable mount 5 carrying an inclined glass plate 6. This causes lateral displacement of the iimage of marking 2, the locus of the displaced image position being a circle as the mount 5 is rotated. The support 4 rests firmly in the H-sectioned body 1 of the scale, an inclined cover-glass 8 being provided to eliminate disturbing reflections. Errors in the intersections A-E of a grid-scale (Fig. 5), may be similarly corrected, using two glass plates. It is useful to employ mounts for the inclined glass plates that, as shown in Fig. 9, can be tilted about a horizontal axis X by means of screws 34, 35 and the knifeedge 33, as well as rotated about a vertical axis. A scale having correctly-adjusted optical elements can be used as a master in a comparator apparatus.
