Abstract

The invention comprises 9a -18-nor-D-homo-13a -androstane compounds having the formula: <FORM:0924007/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 and R2 represent differently esterified secondary alcoholic functions and in which R3 may represent either a hydroxy group in the b -orientation or the oxygen atom =O of a keto group and processes for the preparation thereof in which a 3b ,17b -diester of 18-nor-D-homo-D 9(11)-13a -androstane having the formula: <FORM:0924007/IV(a)/2> wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above, is bromoxidised with an N-bromo-amide to form the corresponding diester of 9a -bromo-11b -hydroxy-18-nor-D-homo-13a -androstane. The 11b -hydroxy group may be oxidised to an 11-keto group with a mixture of acetic and chromic acids or by the action of N-bromo-succinimide, N-bromacetamide or N-bromo-hydantoin.
