Abstract

The invention comprises 11a -methyl-11b -hydroxy steroids of the general formula <FORM:0893723/IV (b)/1> wherein X is a D 4 : 5 bond or a saturated 4 : 5 a -linkage R is keto, or a - or b -hydroxy or acyloxy, R1 is keto, b -hydroxy or acyloxy, or b -hydroxy together with an a -methyl group, the acyloxy groups being derived from hydrocarbon carboxylic acids of less than 12 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R1 is not keto when R is keto; also 3-n-pyrrolidyl-11a - methyl - D 3,5 - androstadien-11b -ol-17-one and the corresponding 17-methyl-17b -ol compound, together with a process for the preparation of compounds of the above general formula by reacting the corresponding 11-keto compounds with methyl lithium, preferably under nitrogen and in ethereal solution. Detailed examples illustrate the invention and include the preparation of the acetate, propionate cyclopentylpropionate and benzoate esters. 11a - Methyl - D 4 - androsten - 11b - ol - 3, 17 - dione required as an intermediate is prepared by reacting 3, 17 - bis - ethylenedioxy - D 5 - androsten-11-one with methyl lithium and treating the resulting 11a -methyl-3,17-bis-ethylenedioxy-D 5 -androsten-11b -ol with p-toluene sulphonic acid in acetone or with acetic acid.
