Abstract
Sterols and sterol esters having the formula <FORM:0705318/IV(b)/1> are obtained by heating the corresponding D 5,7 -pregnadienes with mercuric acetate and acetic acid in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms per molecule, separating the product, and if desired hydrolyzing any ester groups in the 3 and/or 21 positions. The reaction may be effected at 50-125 DEG C. In the above formula, R is hydrogen or an acyl or aroyl radical, R1 is hydrogen or a hydroxyl radical and R11 is hydrogen, hydroxyl or an acyloxy radical.
