Abstract

921,442. Infants' feeding-bottles. PYRAMID RUBBER CO. June 29, 1959 [March 2, 1959], No. 22286/59. Class 66. The nipple of an infant's feeding-bottle has its flange 30 clamped against the upper surface 18 of the bottle neck by a screw cap 42, the flange so being provided around its outer periphery with an upstanding ridge 35 so that, as the cap is screwed on, this ridge is pressed down causing the rubber 46 at the lower side of the flange to flow down into a rabbet 20 on the bottle and so form a collar around the bottle lip. The flange 30, which has a reduced web portion 32 for greater flexibility, is also provided with one or more vent passages 34. The flat top portion 36 of the cap is snapped into position around the nipple between flange 30 and a shoulder 26 on the nipple, radial and vertical lugs 27, 28 on the nipple serving to space the cap from the shoulder 26 and sides of the nipple respectively so as to leave air passages therebetween leading to an annular channel 37 between the underside of cap top 36 and top of web portion 32. In use, when there is reduced pressure inside the bottle, flange 30 flexes inwardly allowing air to pass between the underside of cap top 36 and through passages 34 into the bottle. An annular bead 40 is disposed on the underside of the screw cap just inside the ridge 35 so as to overlie the middle of the bottle lip so that, as the cap is screwed on to depress the ridge 35 as described above, the bead 40 is forced down into the body of the flange 30 maintaining its interengagement with the ridge 35 and so forming a double interlock of the flange with the screw cap and bottle. It is stated that the bead will also cause rubber to flow towards the vent holes and reduce their size. When it is desired to use the bottle for storage of food, the nipple is inverted, Fig. 3, the ridge 35 then fitting into rabbet 20. A sealing disc is disposed between the nipple and the screw cap, said disc having a thicker central portion 52, thinner peripheral portion 54 which overlies the vent holes 34, a circular upstanding flange 56 fitting inside the aperture in the top 36 of the cap and a finger grip upstanding flange 58. When the cap is screwed down, the thick portion 52 pushes down on the nipple flexing the web 32 and sealing over the mouth of the nipple. A modification is described, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), in which the ridge 35 is made slightly smaller in volume and an additional partially preformed ridge is provided on the underside of the nipple flange, the combined volumes of the two ridges being slightly greater than that of rabbet 20.
