Abstract

739,521. Feeding-bottles; venting. DAVOL RUBBER CO. March 20, 1954, No. 8205/54. Classes 21 and 125 (1). A nipple for a feeding bottle comprises a body portion 17 with a base flange 15 of annular form, the flange 15 having a recess 30 in its lower surface providing an area of reduced thickness above the recess and an air vent passage 38 extending through the flange and communicating with the recess. The amount of venting and hence the flow of liquid is controlled by a screwed retainer cap 13 having a central opening seated loosely over the nipple body and pressing the nipple flange 15 adjustably against the bottle neck rim so as to distort the flange and vary the shape and size of the vent 38. The retainer cap has an annular rib 47 to bear on the nipple flange 15. The nipple may have a tapered edge 57 and an internal annular rib 58 so that it may be used as a small-mouthed bottle. When not in use the nipple may be inverted in the mouth of the bottle and the opening sealed by a plug 48, Fig. 5, shaped to engage the internal peripheries of the retainer cap.
