Abstract
921,230. Forging presses. WAGNER & CO. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK M.B.H. Dec. 2, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 40978/59. Class 83 (4). A forging press for forming part of a production line, has a plurality of tools 6, 7, 8 for performing successive operations on a workpiece 25-29, Fig. 2, fed stepwise through the press by pairs of grippers 15-19 fixed to a pair of parallel bars 12, 13 reciprocable longitudinally on the press table 10. In the manufacture of ball bearing race rings, a square section blank 25 is first upset to shape 26 by a tool 6, then pressed and partially pierced to shape 27 by a die 7, and after reversing finally pierced and sized to shape 28 by a die 8. The finished workpiece 29 is removed to a manipulator which delivers it to a ring rolling mill. Bars 12, 13 have the grippers 15, 16 resiliently mounted thereon and grippers 17, 18 positively fixed ; all the grippers may be positively mounted, however. Grippers 19 are mounted on a transverse shaft running in bearings 20 and carrying a pinion 22 adapted to mesh with a fixed rack 23 for reversing the workpiece during forward reciprocation only of the bars. The rack and pinion may be replaced by a plain wheel with a friction lining co-operating with a plane surface. Bars 12, 13 are reciprocated by a cam disc 33, Fig. 1, driven from the crank-shaft through linkage 34 adjustably connected to lever 38, lever 40, link 41 and slide 42. The bars are also reciprocated transversely for closing and opening the grippers such as 17, Fig. 5, by a cam 55 on the press ram, actuating a lever 52 connected by a pair of longitudinally adjustable spring-loaded rods 45 and adjustable levers 56 to quadrants 61 meshing with racks 67. Each rack 67 is clamped to a transverse slide 64 carrying the bar 12, and meshes with a pinion 66 driving a second rack 68 clamped to a transverse slide 65 carrying the bar 13. Alternatively the grippers may be driven independently of the press. The workpieces may rest on a flat strip 11 during forging or bottom dies may be used in which case the grippers 77, Fig. 6, may be raised relatively to their bars 77 to extract the workpiece from these dies or to accommodate an ejected workpiece, by an eccentric 82 driven by a rack and pinion mechanism 83, 84, Fig. 7 (not shown). Alternatively, the gripper may be raised electrically or by an hydraulic piston, Fig. 8 (not shown).
