Abstract

919,848. Pipe joints. EVERED & CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1959 [June 24, 1958; Aug. 12, 1958], Nos. 20119/58 and 25812/58. Class 99(1). In a joint for pipes of synthetic resin, such as polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, an externally screw-threaded sleeve 12 has an internal seating 15 tapering convergently from the mouth thereof and for the reception of the leading end portion of a double-walled ferrule affording an annular socket for enclosing the end portion of a pipe 19, the outer wall 17 forming, or terminating to afford at its free end, a space for the accommodation of an annular compression member 24 engageable by the internal flange 26 of a nut 25 screwed up on the sleeve. The ferrule or a part thereof is removably assembled or adapted for assembly with the sleeve and nut so that the ferrule or said part can, when required, be discarded thereby permitting the fitting to be used in conjunction with a metal pipe of lesser wall thickness than the said pipe of synthetic resin. As shown, the outer wall 17, which may be of a synthetic resin, of the ferrule is stepped inwardly and converges towards and abuts an outwardly directed lip 21 of the inner wall 16 of the ferrule. The nylon member 24 has tapered end faces 23, 27 on the wall 17 and flange 26. According to the Provisional Specifications the socket defined by the walls of the ferrule is axially tapered, and the inner wall has external, circumferential and laterally spaced grooves; the outer part of the ferrule may be made captive and rotatable within the nut.
