Abstract

818,250. Pipe &c. couplings. FRASER & GLASS Ltd. Feb. 18, 1958 [Feb. 18, 1957], No. 5391/57. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXV] A coupling of resilient plastic, e.g. polyethylene, has two or more apertures for the reception of pipes or other fittings, and nuts of metal or a plastic harder than that of the coupling, e.g. polystyrene, are screw-threadedly fitted over each aperture. There are means on the coupling and on the nuts which engage as the nuts are screwed on to the coupling so that the diameter of the apertures is diminished to grip the pipes. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the coupling has external frusto-conical portions 2 which are engaged by corresponding portions 8 of the nuts, and internal annular ribs 6 recieved in grooves formed in the pipes. In modifications (a) the pipes are screwed into the coupling and an inwardly projecting annular rib of the nut engages the frusto-conical portion of the coupling ; alternatively, the coupling has inwardly annular protecting ribs which fit into corresponding grooves in the pipes and, (b) the nuts and coupling have corresponding threaded frusto-conical portions, the pipes being screwed into the coupling.
