The top rollers of drafting apparatus are loaded by pneumatic cylinders 01, 03 adjustably mounted along a roller arm, to and from which air is supplied and vented by a valve N operated by a locking lever L coupled with the arm as the latter is lowered and raised. The lever L is pivoted at A to the arm H which is itself pivoted at B to a bracket J. The latter carries the valve N and is secured to a bar K which has an upper flat permitting the arm to be accurately positioned. It also has a projection E engaged on either side by a spring- catch D also pivoted at A and carried by arm H to secure the arm in raised or lowered position. Each cylinder comprises a fixed piston S through which air is admitted, when the valve is operated by a projection N on the arm L, to a cylinder secured to a piston member P bearing on the roller R and guided to travel vertically by arms depending from a hooded member T secured to the fixed piston S. When the arm is to be raised, lever L is first lifted and immediately operates valve N to vent the cylinders, but does not begin to raise the arm until lostmotion represented by a clearance C is taken up, whereupon it releases catch D and lifts the arm. The apparatus provides for an equal loading of all the rollers which can be changed by a master valve in the supply to valve N; the loadings of individual rollers may, however, be varied by changing the cylinders.
