Abstract

917,677. Valves. VULLIEZ, P. Jan. 12, 1960 [Jan. 16, 1959; Aug. 7, 1959], No. 1158/60. Class 135. The movable closure member of a valve is provided with a closure element that is connected to the member by two ball-and-socket type joints. In one embodiment, a cast-iron plug-closure member 12, Fig. 1, with a central passage 15 undergoes two separtate movements between the valve open and closed positions, one movement being rotary and the other axial on to or away from the conical or part-spherical seat 10; the plug 12 carries a part-spherical stainless steel or bronze closure element 11 which is mounted to be self-centring on the seat by means of two ball-and-socket joints formed by bearings 16, 17 and 18, 19 at the periphery and centre of the element, respectively. The bearing part 18 is comprised of a shoe 23 in the member 12 and an adjustable insert 20 screwed into the element 11. Both joints have a common centre O which is above the contact line H-H<SP>1</SP> of the peripheral bearing part 17. The two valve operating movements may occur sequentially or simultaneously ; a sealing ring may be disposed on the seat or the element 11. In a modification, the bearing part 17, Fig. 3, is formed in an intermediate plate, whilst the bearing part 19 is constituted by a partspherical screw head 26; the bearing part 18 is formed on a shoe 29 threaded into the element 11. The plate 24 may be dispensed with. The double-joint arrangement of closure element and closure member is also applied to a butterfly valve, hinged and lift-check valves and a single-beat lift-valve; in the latter case the stem is connected to the closure member by two half-rings 33 so that rotation of the stem is not imparted to the bearing surfaces.
