Abstract
798,090. Valves. MORGAN, C. O. B. April 6, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955; May 25, 1955; Aug. 10, 1955], Nos. 3381/55, 15158/55 and 23062/55. Class 135. A tap for controlling liquid flow comprises a hollow body 10 having an outlet 11, an auxiliary annular seating 12, a plugmember 13 providing a main annular seating and an outlet 14, and a spindle 18 carrying an auxiliary obturating member 22 rotatable with the spindle and a main obturating member 26 comprising a jumper element. A resilient or compressible sealing washer 16 may be carried either by the pluglike member 13 or by the jumper element, the arrangement being such that during normal operation of the tap appropriate rotation of the actuating spindle will cause the sealing washer to be compressed between the main seating and the main obturating member, thereby shutting of the flow of liquid through the tap, but in the event of the washer becoming worn or damaged the spindle may be further operated to cause the auxiliary obturating member to co-operate with the auxiliary seating to shut off the flow through the tap, so that the plug-like member 13 may be removed to allow replacement of the washer 16. In another embodiment the auxiliary obturating member is provided by a portion of the spindle of increased diameter and the plug-like member is replaced by a cap-like member threaded on to the outside of the tap body. In a further embodiment the tongues 27 securing the jumper element 26 to the spindle are replaced by radially directed screws or pins introduced through an upstanding flange around the perphery of the jumper and engaging in an annular lip or flange in the spindle.
