Abstract

843,845. Valves. WISEMAN & SONS Ltd., D. F., and SWAIN, F. E. Oct. 22, 1958, No. 33170/57. Addition to 753,860. Class 135. In a butterfly valve having a radially expansible seating ring mounted in a recess in the valve body bore for sealing engagement with the periphery of the butterfly closure member in the closed position of the valve, the closure member comprises a cylindrical boss 4 on which is angularly disposed a circular plate 3 having a bi-convex shape with a part-spherical sealing edge. The seating ring 5 is mounted in a recess 6 disposed at right angles to the bore 8 of the valve body with the axis of the operating shaft 9 inclined at an angle to the plane of the recess so that the bearings which support the shaft are one on each side of the seating ring. The seating ring may be U-section as shown, or rectangular section, held against axial movement but allowed to move and expand radially. Fluid pressure acting on the closed plate gives an endwise component in the shaft 9 which is resisted by screw threads X or a thrust bearing. In an alternative construction, the shaft axis is at right angles to the body bore and the recess inclined.
