Abstract

Relates to 4-fluorophenylthiomethylpenicillin and non-toxic salts thereof. The penicillin may be prepared by fermenting a suitable nutrient medium under aerobic conditions with a penicillin-producing species of the genus Penicillium in the presence of 4-fluorophenylthioacetic acid or a functional derivative thereof, such as the corresponding esters, amide, alcohol or aldehyde, as a precursor, and recovering 4-fluorophenylthiomethylpenicillin from the fermented medium. Pharmaceutical compositions may be prepared containing the penicillin and a pharmaceutical carrier.
