In a photographic camera or a cinematograph camera having a viewfinder with a field limiting means movable in the field of view by means of the camera lens for compensating the parallax between the camera lens and the viewfinder, a light screening element is arranged to extend between the outer margin of the field limiting means and a portion of the camera body limiting the path of the field limiting means on movement of the said means, in order to prevent the passage of extraneous light. As shown, a parallax compensating slide 32 positioned immediately behind a front viewfinder window 5 is arranged to be adjusted by a cam 9 on a focusing ring 4 through two rigidly coupled levers 11, 13 pivoted at 12 and through a spring urged slide rod 20. To prevent extraneous light from entering the viewfinder when the slide 32 is lowered, a light screening flap 37 pivoted at 36 is maintained in engagement with a flange 34 of the slide by a spring urged mask 38, also pivoted at 36. When the camera is used with a telephoto lens, the mask 38 is pivoted down into a position parallel with the slide 32 by means of a lever 42 and a winding knob 8, the knob 8 being held in position by spring detent means and the flap 37 being prevented from descending into a position in which it would obscure the field of view by the engagement of a rearward extension thereof with a cross piece 28b of the viewfinder housing. The front view-finder window 5 may carry a distance scale 50 and the slide 32 a co-operating index 51, as shown, or the scale may be visible through a window in the slide. In a modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), the mask 38 is pivoted on the slide 32 itself, as a result of which, parallax compensation for a telephoto lens is obtained in the same way as for the lens shown, a cam corresponding to the cam 9 being provided on the telephoto lens for this purpose. In this case, extraneous light is prevented from entering the viewfinder by means of a sheet of flexible material between the flange 34 and the cross piece 28b. The slide 20 and control levers may be arranged on a side wall of the camera instead of on the front wall as shown.
