Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group X] A panel for thermal and acoustic insulation comprises a relatively thick layer of a porous soundabsorbing material which is covered on at least one side by comparatively non-porous and relatively thin sheet material, the layer being formed with internal cavities of elongated shape, arranged, preferably parallel to one another, with their long dimensions parallel to the surface of the layer, each cavity having at least one opening in the form of a slot extending in the direction of the length of the cavity, and through the intervening material of the layer and the sheet material covering the layer. As shown, facing layers 11 and 12, of, e.g., wood veneer or fibreboard, are bonded, e.g. by a glue, to a thick layer 13 of porous sound-absorbing material, e.g. wood particles or fibres loosely compressed and bonded by a binder, e.g. a glue. Elongated cavities 14 in the porous layer communicate with slots 16. In other embodiments, not shown: successive cavities communicate alternately with slots on opposite sides of the panel; slots enter the cavities non-symmetrically, e.g. tangentially; slots are not normal to the face of the panel; the slots are shorter than the cavities, several being distributed along the length of a cavity; short slots are staggered relatively to other rows of slots on the same or the opposite face of the panel; the cavities are broken up into compartments of differing volume by plugs or dowels, e.g. of wood, which may be glued into position in the cavities; a panel with slots on one side only has small holes entering the cavities from the other side; and the cavities differ from one another in volume, size or shape.
