Abstract
A building panel comprises a plate of hard foamed plastic such as polystyrene with a skin of a fibrous material such as wood or wood-based board applied to both faces to give the composite panel bending strength. The board is pref. glued to the plastic plate by means of a single component polyurethane glue. The thicknesses of the layers depend on the application but the plastic plate is always thicker than either of the fibre layers. For example, the plastic plate may have thickness in excess of 10cms. and the fibrous layers thicknesses les sthan 8 mm. Adjacent panels are pref. butt-jointed together by the tongue and groove principal whereby the groove is cut in both edges of the panels and an elastic strip is inserted into the slot. When the panels are used for roofing, the outer layer may have an additional moisutre-proof layer. Because of the inherent strength of the material, the panels may be used to span large gaps whilst offering the thermal and sound insulating properties of traditional filler panels. A construction using this type of panel for wall or roofing may dispense with the supporting structure thereby saving in the overall cost of the building.
