The joint pin 1 of a cutter chain comprises a tube within which is housed a spring 6 which urges a detent 5 through a hole in the tube wall to restrain the pin against axial movement, by engagement with an annular groove 4 in one of the chain links 2, 3 joined by the pin. The pin may be integral with a coded spring, as shown, or be mounted on a bow-shaped leaf-spring disposed generally parallel to the pin's longitudinal axis (Fig. 2, not shown).
