905,332. Tripod heads. NAKATANI, K. Nov. 26, 1958, No. 38209/58. Class 52 (3). [Also in Group XX] A tripod for a camera comprises a rod 4 axially movable through a cylinder block 8 having a bearing cylinder 9 on one side thereof with its axis perpendicular to the axis of the rod, this cylinder being rotatably mounted between bearing plates 6, 7 projecting upwardly from a bearing board 3 supported by the legs 1 of the tripod. Board 3 is rotatably mounted on a disc 2 to which the legs 1 are hinged and a recess 5 is provided in members 2 and 3 for accommodating the rod 4 when vertical. A clamping nut 26 is provided for holding the rod in position. The rod 4 is provided with rack teeth 10 engaged by a pinion 11 connected to a handle 16 for moving the rod through the cylinder block 8. As shown (Fig. 4) the handle 16 is coupled to the pinion 11 by way of a spindle 15 passing through a hub cylinder 13 screwthreadedly connected to the bearing cylinder 9. The extension 17 of the spindle 15 on the other side of the pinion 11 is rotatably mounted in a bearing hole 19 in a disc 18 which is prevented from rotating by projections 20 engaging in cavities 21 in the cylinder 9 and which may be clamped to the plate 6 to lock the inclination of the rod 4 by a lock-nut 22 screw-threadedly mounted on an extension 14 of the disc 18. A spring detent device 28 (cf. Figs. 5-8, not shown) may be provided engaging with the ratchet teeth to prevent unintentional movement of the rod under gravity. Several attachment points 23 for cameras and/or other instruments are provided together with a further one at 24 on the cylinder block 8.
