Abstract

905,174. Variable-speed gear. PRIESTLEY, C. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 24,1958],No. 41635/58. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2). Continuously variable epicyclic gearing comprises a non-circular sun 1 held stationary during running of the gear and meshing non- circular planets 2 in an input driven carrier 6. Each planet 2 is fast with a circular gear 3 coaxial with the axis of rotation of the planet, the gears 3 meshing at one point during a revolution of the carrier with a ring gear 4 eccentric to the axis of rotation of the planet carrier. The gear ratio may be varied either by locking the sun gear in a different angular position, or by varying the angular position of the axis of the ring gear with respect to the axis of rotation of the carrier. In order to permit this last alternative the ring gear is fast with a ring gear 7 meshing a gear 8 concentric with the axis of rotation of the carrier. Gear 8 is fast with a ring gear 12 meshing planets 10 freely rotatable on the carrier 6 and meshing an output sun 11. The shape of the sun 1 and planet gears 2 shown in Fig. 1 is purely diagrammatic, the actual shape being as shown in Fig. 3.
