Abstract

905,152. Washing-machines. GENERAL MOTOR CORPORATION. May 31, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 19638/61. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A pump has a liquid inlet and an air inlet leading to the eye of an impeller in a pump chamber. After spin-drying in a washing- machine, water is removed from a water container by a pump 40. The water inlet 42 is connected by a conduit to the base of the water container to provide a gravity feed to the pump. The base 58 of the pump chamber 60 is of plastic material and has the water inlet 42 and an air inlet 52 integral therewith. The impeller 66 is mounted on a shaft 32 of a two-speed reversible motor, which also drives a reciprocating agitator and the spin dryer, and water is directed to one or other side of a vane 70 in the outlet 46. A seal 68 prevents water leaking from the chamber 60 and the pump is supported by columns 71 beneath the motor. The air inlet 52 is connected by a pipe to the inside of the water container, the pipe extending above the highest level of the water. At low speed, the pressure at the eye of the impeller is near atmospheric and there is little intake of air. At high speed, the pressure is kept near atmospheric by the inflow of air and this reduces the load on the motor.
