Abstract

668,845. Washing and drying machines. RAND WASHING MACHINE CORPORATION, H. J. Dec. 22, 1948 [Jan. 31, 1948], No. 33032/48. Class 138 (ii). A washing-machine comprises a flexible liquid and air-tight bag 10 for holding laundry and detergent, means 25 for maintaining a circulation of the detergent within the bag and means 28 for simultaneously withdrawing the detergent and air from the bag to cause the bag to collapse against the laundry to squeeze the detergent from the laundry. The bag 10 is supported within a casing 13 by a cylindrical plate 12 and a bottom plate 11 and has a top opening closed by a self-sealing cover 16 of the type described in Specification 668,844. An opening in the bottom of the bag is closed by a top plate 18 which has a central opening 19 and a plurality of peripheral openings 20 and by a bottom plate 21. The space between the two plates forms a pumping chamber. A perforated post 23 rises from the centre of the plate 18 inside the bag over the opening 19. A vaned impeller 25 is rotatably mounted in the pumping chamber and is driven by a motor 27. Liquid is circulated by this impeller as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, entering the pumping chamber at the opening 19 and leaving through the openings 20. An opening 36 is provided in the bottom of the pumping chamber through which liquid is supplied to the bag and through which air and liquid is withdrawn by an aspirator 28 to collapse the bag so that atmospheric pressure may squeezedry the clothing. In use, after soap and clothing are placed in the bag and the cover 16 replaced valve 33 is closed and valve 35 opened, a hot water valve 38 and a cold water valve 32 are then opened as desired to supply water to the bag. When the bag is filled the valves are closed and motor 27 is started to circulate the water and wash the clothing. At the end of the washing period and while the impeller 25 is still rotating valves 35, 33 and 32 are opened which causes the aspirator 28 to suck air and liquid from the bag. The impeller keeps any scum circulating so that it is removed with the liquid and not left on the clothing. The aspirator may be replaced by a pump as described in Specification 640,020.
