In a drafting frame, pairs of drafting rollers are arranged in two independent groups, an upper group of which has its rollers in vertical succession and a lower group which has its rollers in a plane at an angle to the vertical, the pairs of rollers in the two groups being so disposed that the line of contact of the top pair of rollers of the bottom group is on or near the line extending vertically beneath the line of contact of the bottom pair of rollers of the upper group. Sliver from cans behind the frame 1 passes through a guide 5 to a first, vertical group of rollers 2, 3 ; 6, 8 ; 7, 9, rollers 6, 8 being provided with aprons, and then to a second, oblique group of rollers, 26, 28 ; 27, 29, of which rollers 26, 28 are provided with aprons. The weighting of the rollers is similar in both groups. A cradle 12 is detachably secured on a cradle 10 by a hook 13 on a lever 15 pivoted at 16 engaging a pin 14. A spring 19 urges the roller 9 against the roller 7 by means of a pivoted plate 17, and a spring 21 urges the rollers 8, 3 against the rollers 6, 2. Should sliver build up on either of the rollers 9, 29 it will cause the lever 15, 41 to pivot and release the hook 13, 33 from the pin 14, 34.
