Abstract

903,179. Pipe couplings. SPEMBLY Ltd., and MAY, R. J. June 2, 1961 [June 27, 1960], No. 22520/60. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve for fitting in a recess in a pipe end or a pipe connection to render the latter self-sealing, comprises a cylindrical housing 1 of light alloy and having one end thereof flanged internally to provide an annular valve seat, a hollow plug 2 fitted into the other end of the housing and provided with a tubular extension 3 formed with flow apertures in the wall thereof, and a ball valve 14, of plastics material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, in the housing and held against the valve seat by a spring 7 surrounding the extension and abutting the plug and a shoulder or shoulders on the ball valve; the latter projects through the valve seat and beyond the end of the housing. A valve may be secured by adhesive in recesses in the ends of pipe coupling members secured together by a union nut mounted on one of the members and screwed on to the other member to draw the members together so that the valves are brought into contact and opened; alternatively, the members are coupled by a bayonet joint.
