Abstract

1,060,866. Making flat bags. REYNOLDS METALS CO. April 16, 1964 [May 8, 1963], No. 15865/64. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] An open-ended rectangular package (20), Fig. 1, formed from a blank has pouches (21), (22) the upper ends of which are sandwiched within the package top wall and secured by heat-sealing or adhesive. Flaps (27), (28) of the package top wall are glued together at a series of spots. The blank may be formed of paper laminated between metal foil, the paper being of a type undamaged by cooking temperatures. The adjacent side walls of the pouches may be adhered together (at 40), Fig. 4, and each pouch may be adhered to the inside of the package wall (at 39). A band of material (38) may be heat-shrunk on to the package in order to make it more rigid. A web of packaging material, Fig. 7, has fold or score lines (43-47) defining blanks (41) which run longitudinally or (as in Fig. 8) transversely of the web. In modifications, the outer flap (27a), Fig. 5, is extended to provide a grip for tearing open the package; the inner fold of the lower flap (28b) may be omitted, Fig. 6; or the pouch may be heat-sealed to the package wall by means of its own closure seal, the pouch wall being a laminate of a heat-sealable material and metal foil, and the foil being omitted at the seal, Fig. 9. A single pouch may be secured in a package which is surrounded by a heat-sealable band, Fig. 10, or the open sides of the package may each be secured by a separate band, Fig. 11.
