Abstract

620,354. Composite packages. SALFISBERG, L. L. Jan. 15, 1947, No. 1350. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 8, 1947.] [Class 94(i)] A vacuum package whose walls comprise opposed approximately flat flexible layers 1 and 2 of material hermetically sealed together in zones 3 forming and bounding a vacuous compartment 4 having therein material 12, which may be fluent, to be packaged, there being portions of the walls of said compartment that are unsealed between said sealed zones and the margins of said material. A marginal portion of each of said layers extends unsealed to form finger-grip flaps 5 for initiating separation by peeling of said layers to open said compartment 4, said sealed zones 3 being shaped and related to said flaps 5 so that tension applied to them in separating said layers will be exerted on the zones 3 from a point in the perimeter thereof inwardly towards the compartment 4 and obliquely in opposite directions from the point of application of tension to the flaps 5. Said sealed zones 3 may have portions in diverging relation to each other from the longitudinal median line of the flaps 5 and oblique to their straight edges, meeting at an angle 6 as in Fig. 1. Alternatively, the diverging portions may be arcuately curved as in Fig. 5 and have a small zone 15 unsealed to assist in breaking the vacuum. The material may be, for example, those known under the Registered Trade Marks " Cellophane " and " Pliofilm " or any other thermoplastic sheet material, or such material having a thermoplastic or adhesive coating, or metal foil. The package may be opened by simple tearing, if desired preceding peeling. Packaged tablets may be crushed into powder by applying pressure as between rolls or belts.
