Abstract

894,806. Universal joints. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 30, 1960 [March 30, 1959], No. 11273/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A double Hooke's type universal joint for a motor vehicle wherein two-part driving and driven forks 52, 86 are connected respectively to an intermediate yoke 104 by coupling members 100, 102, has centring means which comprise a member 74, formed as a surface of revolution from the involute curve, projecting axially from the fork 52 into a conjugate recess 80 in the fork 86. The member 74 is carried by one part 62 of the driving fork which is bolted at 66 to the other part 52 and the recess 80 is formed in one part 78 of the driven fork which is bolted to the other part 86. A reservoir of lubricating oil is retained around the centring means by a flexible casing 152 and a threaded aperture 148 in the base of the recess 80, accessible through a cavity 150 in the connecting member 102, may be provided with a grease fitting. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the member 74 is screwed into the driving fork and axially positioned by a locking nut. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) two Belleville springs are provided between the member 74 and the driving fork.
