Abstract
842,242. Universal joints. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 25, 1958 [June 6, 1958], No. 30745/58. Divided out of 808,807. Class 80 (2). The Hooke's joint for motor cars &c. described in Specification 808,807, comprising a central spider having radially directed arms 2 to each of which is bonded a frusto-conical rubber bush 3 surrounded by an axially split two-part frusto-conical shell 9 bonded thereto and tightened upon the bush to squeeze the rubber, is modified by pressing or stamping the shells from metal plate and forming them with radial lugs 11, 12 and grooves 13 which cooperate with U-bolts 21 secured to yokes 18 on driving and driven shafts 15, 16. The weight of the central spider is reduced by recesses 23 formed at the ends of its arms 2. When assembling the joint, the frusto-conical shells 9 are stressed radially outwards along the arms 2 by a suitable tool to line-up slots 14 in the lugs 11, 12 with holes 20 in the yokes 18, thus compressing the rubber bushes 3. The U-bolts 21 are then passed through the slots and holes 14, 20 and, on tightening the nuts 22, the rubber bushes 3 are further squeezed as the lugs 11, 12 on adjacent shells 9 approach each other.
