Securing wheels, shaft couplings, fly-wheels, arms, brackets, &c. on shafts. - A cylindrical wedge or cotter c, having a flat taper d to engage a flat i milled on the shaft a, is inserted transversely .in an enveloping part, such as the fly-wheel boss b, and is forced in by a thrust element, for example, a screw e. This screw preferably acts through a spring washer f to prevent loosening under vibration. There may be provided a hole h, eccentric to the hole g in which the cotter is inserted, to receive a pin for driving the cotter out.
