Abstract
717,052. Universal joints. CIPOLLETTI, E. Jan. 23, 1952 [Jan. 23, 1951], No. 1901/52. Class 80 (2) A universal joint comprises flanges 2, 4 for attachment to the shafts to be joined, the flange 4 being provided with one or more axial projectLons 12 and the flange 2 having recesses between axial projection 10 forming seats for the projections 12, each of the latter projections being encircled by an elastic element C constituted by two elongated portions 16 joined by straps. 14, both straps and elongated portions being of resilient readily deformable material, the elongated portions 16 being interposed between the projections 12 and the seats. As shown, the elongated portions 16 are of truncated-cone shape, but they may alternatively be of truncated - pyramidal or of cylindrical shape or the like. The sides of the projections 12 may be left rough, as when they come from moulds or from stamping, to help retain the elastic elements C in position, and may be provided with small radially directed grooves 18 for the same purpose. In one modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the projections 10, 12 on the two flanges are of similar shape and both sets of projections carry elastic elements C, and in another modification, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the two flanges 2, 4 are divided into two parts along a plane passing through the axis of rotation, the two parts of each flange being connected by bolts, hinges &c. whereby the joint can be removed from the shaft it connects without disturbing them.
