Abstract

893,323. Moulding brake discs. LAMBERT BRAKE CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1961 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 671/61. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A brake disc assembly is made by stamping a metal e.g. steel disc from sheet stock, sandwiching the disc 12 between two circular uncured blanks 18, 20 of friction material e.g. asbestos fibre with a resin binder and then pressing the assembly in a heated press 30 to mould the friction material into contact with the disc, and so that the outer faces of the pressed assembly are parallel. A press for two such assemblies is shown in Fig. 5 in which pressure e.g. 4000 p.s.i. is applied for e.g. 12 mins by a piston 34 to the friction material and to pressure rings 40, 44 and 50 which have parallel faces 42, 46, 48 and 52, and are held against lateral movement by a cylindrical retainer 38 inside an oven 36 at e.g. 325‹F, The metal discs are welded to central reinforcing washers and have a plurality of punched holes 26 through which the friction material on each side of the discs may bind together. The metal discs are held in the middle of each assembly by spring biased guide members 54, 64, 72, and 76 which are slidable in central bores in the rings 40, 44 and 50, and are held against complete removal from the bores by bolts 62 and 82 in the cases of the guides 54 and 76 respectively and by a tubular element 70 burred over at its ends in the cases of the guides 64 and 72.
