Abstract
889,968. Catch fastenings. EVERED & CO. Ltd. March 17, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 9381/57. Class 44. A fastening device comprises a body 10 adapted to be secured -to a door or other hinged panel or to the surrounding structure and a bolt 14, spring loaded so as to protrude from the body, but limited in the extent of its protrusion by stop means 22, the bolt having a rotary element 20 at its protruding end for co-operation with a catch plate adapted to be secured to the panel or surrounding structure, the catch plate being shaped so as to provide in conjunction with the rotary element, non- prohibitive retention of the panel in a closed position with respect to the surrounding structure, the bolt forming part of an assembly which is insertable into the body of the device as a unit, the assembly including a screwthreaded guide member 15 on which the bolt is slidably but non-rotatably mounted, a coiled compression spring 16 acting between an abutment member 24 on the guide member and an abutment 25 on the bolt to urge the bolt in the direction of increasing protrusion to an extent limited by the stop means which are disposed on the guide member, the screw thread of the latter being engageable with a co-operative screw thread on the body to enable the guide member and bolt to be adjusted in position relatively to the body to vary the extent of protrusion of the bolt by rotating the protruding end of the bolt and hence also the guide member, non-prohibitive retaining means 28 acting between the body and assembly serving to determine stopping positions of adjustment spaced apart angularly about the axis of rotation of the bolt and guide member. The body 10 is of generally cylindrical form closed at its rear end 11 and having a fixing plate 12 at its forward end which is open. The bolt 14 has a rear portion 17 of hollow cylindrical form and the guide member 15, which is a screw threaded bolt, has its head which forms the stop means 22 received in the portion 17 with its stem passing through the end wall of the portion to screwthreadedly engage in the end 11 of the body. At its forward end the bolt has two limbs 19 the outer faces of which are part-spherical in shape and adapted to fit closely within the body 10 and the inner opposed face of which are planar. Between the limbs is the rotary member 20 which is freely rotatable about a pin 21 riveted to the limbs. To prevent free rotation of the bolt two balls or plungers constituting the retaining means 28 are provided, these being mounted in a transverse passage 26 in the bolt with a coiled compression spring 27 between them to urge them outwardly into engagement with a pair of grooves 25 extending endwise of the body. When the balls or plungers are engaged with the grooves the bolt can slide rearwardly into the body but is retained against rotation, but by applying sufficient torque to the bolt the balls or plungers can be forced out of the grooves and the bolt rotated to adjust its protrusion from the body.
