A sliding bolt assembly comprises a bolt member 1 insertable into a .bore . in; the edge of a door and. engageable by one end 10 of a two armed lever 8 of a lever. mechanism adapted to be inserted into a bore in a face cf the door, the other end 12 of the lever forming a tab for manually operating the bolt, the pivotal axis of the lever being substantially parallel with the face of the door and substantially perpendicular to the axis of the bolt. As shown, the lever is forked to engage a reduced portion 11 of the bolt and is pivoted in a plastics mounting 20 set in the door to which it is. secured by pins. The bolt member is slidable in a guide 5 against friction provided by a spring loaded ball 7.
