Abstract

889,797. Liquid-seal valves. ERICSSON TELEPHONES Ltd. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 14, 1957], No. 38954/57. Class 135. A glass chamber 1 has a gas inlet tube 2 and an outlet tube 4 connected to an auxiliary chamber 3 having an outlet tube 6 closed by a porous plug 7. The tube 4 contains a quantity 8 of mercury and is also closed by a porous plug 5. The chamber 1 also contains a quantity of mercury 12 the level of which is determined by the position of an elongated annular member 13 which is controlled by a magnet (not shown). In the position shown, gas from the inlet 2 is unable to pass to the tube 4. If the member 13 is displaced upwardly until the level of the mercury 12 falls below the porous plug 5 gas from the inlet tube 2 can pass via the plug 5, the tube 4, the chamber 3 and the plug 7 to the outlet tube 6. The mercury 8 prevents reverse flow of gas. The arrangement may be used in the filling of gaseous discharge devices. In the Provisional Specification there is described liquid-seal valves in which mercury is only on one side of a porous plug.
