Abstract

Paraformaldehyde is prepared by bubbling a formaldehyde-containing gas through a hot acquous alkaline paraformaldehyde suspension to cause polymerization of the formaldehyde in the gas, allowing the resulting suspension to ripen and thereafter recovering the paraformaldehyde. The initial paraformaldehyde suspension preferably has a concentration of 50-60% by weight calculated as formaldehyde, a pH of 8-9.5 and a temperature of 40-50 DEG C. This initial suspension may be obtained by passing formaldehyde gas through a hot aqueous alkaline formaldehyde solution.
