887,625. Chain hoists sealed against water. DUFF-NORTON CO. July 20, 1959 [Aug. 7, 1958], No. 24885/59. Class 78 (5). A hoist, comprising load sprocket 15 driven by oscillating handle 12, is sealed against dirt and water by seals 51, 58 and 61. The handle 12 drives sprocket 15 through the engagement of pawl 42 with nut 29. Nut 29 is threaded at 28 on shaft 26 and additionally engages ratchet 36 which slides along shaft 26, so that nut and shaft lock together to transmit the drive to sprocket 15. Ratchet 36 co-operates with a holding pawl to prevent back rotation under load. Drive handle 12 (Fig. 3).-This is provided with selector handle 19 which, by rotation, positions pawl 42 such that either the load sprocket 15 is driven in either direction or handle 12 rotates freely without driving. Shaft adjustment (Fig. 6).-Shaft 26 is formed with a square end 70 on which is mounted stopwasher 66, the stop 69 of which co-operates with boss 71 formed on nut 29. Stop 69 functions to limit the rotation of thread 28 to prevent end jamming of ratchet 36. Additionally the adjustable mounting of washer 66 on square 70 enables allowance to be made when friction discs 38, 39 begin to wear.
