Abstract
731,352. Hand-operated winches. DEHN, S. G. (Safway Steel Products, Inc.). Dec. 12, 1951, No. 29116/51. Class 78 (5). Drum 18 is driven from handle 66 through a self-locking device 44 and a sun and planet gearing 30-46. Thus handle 66 is secured by screw 68 to threaded fitting 58 which co-operates with threaded shaft 48 so as to advance therealong and push ratchet disc 44 till the latter engages against flange 56 secured to the shaft, so that the clockwise rotation of the handle drives the shaft which, through sun pinion 46, and through planet gears 30 mounted on fixed spider 28, and through gear ring 22, drives the drum 18 mounted on fixed shaft 10 to elevate the load, pawls 40 and 78 preventing the running back of the load. If the handle is rotated in the anticlockwise direction the load descends under its own weight and the progress of fitting 58 along shaft 48 is checked by pin 72. Stop 82 co-operates with lug 86 on the handle to prevent the latter being accidentally turned anticlockwise, so that, before such turning can take place, stop 82 must be raised clear of pin 86, the raising of stop 82 at the same time lifting pawl 78 to free the drum for rotation. The rope is stripped off the drum (when there is no load) by rotating the handle anticlockwise to free disc 44, removing the handle by unscrewing screw 68 and replacing said screw in the hole shown in the handle diametrically opposite so as to fix the fitting 58 and to leave the drum free to rotate.
