Abstract

1,029,355. Tapping. E. D. JOHNSON & PARTNERS Ltd. Oct. 27, 1964, No. 43675/64. Heading B3N. A tapping device comprises a driving member 100, a driven member 101, connected to an intermediate member 102 by balls 106, and a nut 103 having a left-hand thread 130. Friction rings 108, 112 are bonded to members 100 and 102, respectively, a washer 114 is bonded to member 102, and a second washer 116 is disposed between washer 114 and ring 108. Washer 114 has three rollers 120 which co-operate with wedge-like surfaces 122 on washer 116, and relative angular displacement of the washers is limited by a pin and elongated slot engagement 124, 126. When the tap reaches the bottom of the hole, member 101 is restrained, and members 100, 102 rotate relatively to each other to release clutch means 120, 122. When rotation of member 100 is reversed to withdraw the tap, members 100 and 101 rotate relatively in the opposite direction, to thus engage the clutch means. In a modification, rollers 120 are carried by member 102, and washer 114 is eliminated. In a further modification, washers 114, 116 are inverted, and their positions reversed. Two pawls 142 are pivotally mounted on nut 103, and engage recesses 146 in member 102, to enable the nut to drive member 101 when withdrawing the tap.
